Jessica McGinn –
Brand Manager + Designer

Everything is better when Jessica’s around. She’s got that obscure “je ne sais quoi” which brightens and warms every room she’s in. Literally, a comet inside a person, radiating cheerfulness and enthusiasm. It’s hard to determine exactly how long she’s been working at Tile By Design. Photo’s do exist, {that she’s telling you now you’ll never see} at age eleven and apparently employed. Counting for real, she has been a colossal part of our story for well over 14 years. You know all our fantastic Facebook and Instagram posts? Those charming pictures and hot design tips? That’s all Jessica. Every single word and every single photo. She’s also an exceptional and skilled designer with an impressive portfolio. Especially talented at designing from scratch, on any budget, comfortably working in any style. There’s a wonderful sense of humor here, too. One that catches all the nuances of this absurd world and makes seemingly uneventful occurrences worth retelling and cherishing.

what was your first job
I was 15, my brother and I both got our working permit to be blockers at Shaws.

what do you like to do outside of work
Sundays are for Family Day, and may be a family hike, or popping into a flea market, playgrounds, always lots of coffee, and home projects. I LOVE home projects and we do most ourselves. Everyone who knows me knows that something in my house will change every week. Sometimes it’s big like building walls to something small like moving plants around. Speaking of plants, I love them and have around 50 in my home.

who would you pick to play you in a movie of your life
Emily Blunt because she’s lovely. John Krasinski can play my husband if allowed.

what would be the title of the movie of your life
Eb and Flow
Life is too short and going through traumatic experiences are hard but when you overcome them you feel like you can conquer the world. I’ve had my share of “conquering” which has made me a better person and I’m grateful for it.

who makes you laugh the most
My husband. His sense of humor is great, borderline inappropriate, but for the most part he effortlessly makes me laugh. And my dog too, she’s a smart dopey dog.

who is the most interesting person you know
My kids- it is so cool to watch someone grow. They start off on their journey and neither of you know anything about one another. Then they grow into these little people with their own personalities. How they deal with emotions, what brings them joy, how they fall asleep, you get my jest. It’s all so good.

what are your hidden talents
I can visualize. It’s probably why I feel the need to change my house around so much. I also feel like I’m good at correctly guessing the approximate size of something.

best decision you ever made
My husband, my two kids, my job – pretty much all the major life choices. Justin is a good man, like exceptional, and refreshingly not perfect. He makes me breakfast, packs my lunch, does all the dishes and laundry, helps with the kids and lets me sleep in. Marry well and love hard.

what’s the worst advice you’ve received
There are too many opinions out there and when I believe what I think is right there really is no persuading me without concrete facts. I’m not sure what has been the worst advice but people sure do have a lot of unsolicited advice to share!

morning person or night owl
I want to be a morning person but love to sleep too much.

who was your idol growing up
My dad was and still is. He’s genuine. He does the “right” things, doesn’t lie, works on his physical and mental health daily, loves my mom unconditionally, and treats his children and grandchildren with respect. He taught me to work hard, love and respect myself, enjoy the small things in life and how to love and be loved. Thanks, Dad.

a favorite place
Costa Rica, were I spent many years in my 20s, visiting for weeks at a time and adventuring through the rainforest, jumping off waterfalls, ziplining, hiking.  My hometown; The house I grew up in, the beaches, visiting childhood friends. Returning to my childhood home is so comforting. Any outdoor spots to hike. I love the smell of pine trees, the sight of the ocean or any body of water, hearing the birds, and seeing how mother nature has affected the grounds.

what super power do you wish you had
To stretch time. I feel like there is never enough to go around.

your favorite artists {musician, painter, writer}
Music is my thing and I like it all, well almost all. Some of my favorites are (specifically) and not in order: Faces, Paul McCartney, Macklemore, Melanie, Tai Verdes, Bob Dylan, Beyonce, Dirty Heads, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Citizen Cope, Justin Bieber, Jack Johnson, Taj Mahal, Taylor Swift, Talking Heads

what was the last book you read
I love reading with my children. Last night’s book was, ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’

What is the last movie you watched
I’m more into series. Outlander is my all-time favorite, but I also like Sex Education, Ozark, Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, and Game of Thrones

what’s the last gift you gave
For my Dad’s 60th birthday, I gave him a cooler filled with 60 different beers.

if you were in charge, what would you make a law
Domestic and childhood violence would endure an extremely harsh punishment.

reveal an early inspiration
In second grade I really wanted to design my dream house. With my Dads help we sat down a few times a week for a month making architectural plans. I knew at that moment that I wanted to be in the design/build world and here I am 3 decades later.

where’s your favorite place to eat
My favorite place to eat is Roberts Maine Bar and Grill in Kittery.

what is the one thing you must have in your refrigerator
Creamer for coffee, berries, cucumbers, cheese sticks. I know more than one but there’s technically four of us soooo…

who famous would you like to have dinner with past or present
Sam Heughan or as I refer to him strictly as Jamie (dressed as season 1). If you know you know.

would you rather sing everything or lose the ability to speak?
Obviously sing- I like to be heard too much to never speak again.

something about yourself that people would be surprised to know
In 2019, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor when I was 8.5 months pregnant. Yep.
